What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is a systems biology-based approach to care that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of the disease or symptom. With Functional Medicine, we identify the underlying factors that contribute to health issues and illness – often a result of genes, environment, and lifestyle. The clear goal of our treatment plan is to address the right cause (the root) providing a lasting benefit beyond symptom supression.

Is Functional Medicine right for me?

This care combines conventional medicine (with or without functional medicine) with complementary and/or alternative practices for optimal patient wellness.

Functional Medicine believes a single condition has many causes and a single cause can contribute to many conditions.

Our Functional Medicine clinicians have the training and tools necessary to identify the root cause and to promote balance in physiology as the primary means of improving patient health.

Functional Medicine recognizes each person as a complex individual.

We view health and illness as part of a continuum in which all components of the human biological systems interact. People are complex!

With Functional Medicine, restoration of health requires improving the specific dysfunctions that have contributed to the disease state vs giving a pharmaceutical to alleviate symptoms. 

 

What to expect

Your First Visit

Your first visit will be much longer than any medical appointment you've had in recent years. Expect it to last up to an hour.

During this time, your Functional Medicine Clinician will take a VERY detailed history. This timeline organizes your history chronologically in a graphic chart. This helps us to identify factors that may predispose, provoke, and contribute to your overall health. For further clarification and diagnostics, we may recommend specific testing. We'll look at the connection between the your whole lifespan and your current health. This insight is so beneficial – not only to the clinician, but to you as well.  

Once your timeline has been completed, we have a specific matrix we use to give us a comprehensive perspective of your health. This is essential when we are trying to solve complex chronic conditions. 

What to expect

Your Second Visit & Beyond

During your second visit, we'll review lab findings and begin suggesting modifications that you can implement. We'll discuss specialty testing and make arrangements as necessary. This is the appointment where our patients often have a lot of questions. 

During subsequent visits, we'll work with you to follow your care plan and monitor your progress. We can make adjustments as needed so you can continue on a journey of healing and health.
