Shawn's work in birth began more than 20 years ago when she started volunteering at a birth center/home birth practice in California. She was profoundly moved by the experience of being in the presence of birthing women and knew that she had found her passion in life. It began her journey into midwifery. Since that time she has been involved in childbirth and women's health in a variety of roles and settings in hospitals and clinics in California, Colorado, and Minnesota.
Shawn is experienced providing a full range of care as a primary provider – conducting physical exams, diagnostics, treatment and follow-up for both OB and GYN clients. She has counseled and educated patients regarding reproductive health issues, wellness, family planning, provided counseling and prescriptive treatment for clients with anxiety and depression. Most recently she has been in practice as a full-scope midwife in a hospital in a western suburb of the Twin Cities. She has experience supporting all birthing options, including water birth.
About her philosophy of care, Shawn says:
"I center my practice on maintaining a compassionate, calming and approachable presence where women are empowered to feel confident, strong and safe. It is important to me that the women and families I work with feel heard, informed and supported.
My role as a midwife is to be your partner in healthcare whether it be family planning, pregnancy, and birth or wellness visits. I will guide you through the decision-making process and make sure you have the knowledge you need to make informed decision about your healthcare.
I believe that birth is one of the most transformative and profound experiences in a lifetime. I am humbled to be invited into this intimate space where families are born. I truly love what I do."

In real life
Shawn grew up in Northern MN and is married to her high school sweetheart, Kurt. Together they have had many adventures, including living in California and Colorado (twice) before returning home to Minnesota. They have three amazing kids who keep them laughing and busy. When she's not watching her kids play hockey, you’ll find her hanging out with her family, thrifting, using power tools on home renovation projects, paddle boarding, or enjoying the outdoors..
